This project contains 2 other levels/maps on my portfolio, White Fungi Swamp and Wysteria Falls, all heavily inspired by Avatar, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora!
This project marked my first deep dive into creating organic environments, and it was an exciting challenge! I started by building a mood board to capture the visual tone and atmosphere I wanted to achieve, which served as a creative guide throughout the entire process. My main inspiration came from The Cove of the Ancestors in Avatar: The Way of Water, drawing especially from the vibrant, coastal beauty of the Metkayina’s home.
COMPLETED JANUARY 2024
I began by sculpting the foundational landscape, carefully defining and assigning distinct biomes to specific regions to establish environmental diversity. Once the terrain was shaped and painted, I added key atmospheric elements, including a dynamic ocean/water system and a sky sphere to set the overall mood and lighting of the scene.
With the environment's core in place, I focused on adding standout geological features—such as floating islands, dramatic rock formations, and expansive mountain ranges—to bring depth, scale, and visual interest to the world.

Leveraging the extensive asset library available in ARK’s Dev Kit, I curated a diverse selection of trees, plants, and rocks that aligned with the visual identity and atmosphere of the island. The foliage composition blends coastal and dense jungle elements, enhanced with stylized, otherworldly vegetation to evoke an "alienated" aesthetic inspired by Avatar.
I also manually edited the textures to achieve certain colors and looks. This approach helped create unique biomes that feels both immersive and visually distinct.
The map features two distinct biomes — Scarlet Canopy, a rich, red jungle environment, and Whispering Sands, a soft, pastel-toned beach. Beyond the visuals, I made sure the level functions properly within ARK’s game engine, bringing both artistic vision and gameplay functionality together.
